Mental Health.. A Primer
There is much stigma surrounding mental health disorders, which continues to prevent many people from seeking out the help they need. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in four adults experiences a mental illness in a given year and one in 17 adults live with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder (BPD). There are many different types of mental illness which can either occur individually or simultaneously. Dual diagnoses of mental illnesses or a mental illness in conjunction with a substance abuse issue are more common than one might think. According to the National Institute on Mental Health, less than half of Americans who are suffering from a mental illness actually receive treatment when treatment can actually make all the difference in the world for them.
Obtaining proper care for one’s mental illness will usually consist of a combination of psychotherapy, medication and for some, a temporary change in environment. Depending on one’s circumstances, there are different ways to obtain treatment. Partial-hospitalization is the usual form of treating mental illness, which can be done on an outpatient basis or an inpatient program. Additionally, individuals may want to consider the option of a residential treatment program where they can focus solely on their recovery.
Treatment for mental illness may include the use of medication, therapy or a combination of the two. Treating mental illness with medications will depend on the illness itself and the individual’s genetics. Furthermore, any medication used should only be prescribed by a doctor after thorough examination. There are also various psychotherapy treatment modalities that are used for certain mental illnesses such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, EMDR and alternative therapies such as art or equine. These are but a few of the various therapeutic modalities and philosophies to treat mental illness. Additional help can also be found through support groups.
As a result of having no known cures for mental illness, substantial treatment does not only consist of a 30 to 90-day visit at a treatment center, but continual care and therapy may be necessary post-recovery with the help of a psychotherapist, psychologist or psychiatrist. Change isn’t easy, but finding help is better than allowing a mental illness go untreated and rule one’s life.
