TV star Eric Dane reveals struggle with depression

Actor Eric Dane has opened up about his recent struggle with depression that coerced him to seek a break from his TNT series The Last Ship in April. The Grey’s Anatomy alum emphasized on the need for affected people to come forward and share their problems. He said that it was important to take note of the physiological and psychological changes that one’s body may be going through as a result of emotional disorders.

“I took some time off – I was dealing with some depression, which was kind of odd to me. I felt very conflicted about it because I didn’t really feel like I had anything to be depressed about,” the 44-year-old star said, adding that he was recommended a medicine that helps him manage his mood sans the symptoms and effects of depression.

Dane had been diagnosed with dependence on prescription medicines earlier and was even admitted to a rehabilitation center in 2011. While Dane had been struggling with depression for some time, he realized its adverse effects only after the signs of the disorder became severe and unmanageable. Dane explained, “That was a scary thing, when you wake up and you’re like: ‘I don’t want to get out of bed.’ I was seeing these doctors thinking that there was something physically wrong with me, because I’d never felt like that.”

Using fame to inspire others

This is not the first time that a celebrity has unhesitatingly shared about their mental disorder. In fact, Dane is the latest to join a long list of celebrities who have recently opened up about their problems in a bid to help others.

Many find it difficult to talk about their mental illnesses. The fear of being judged or the revelation adversely impacting their career forces them to quietly suffer. Some of the famous people who have lent their voices to allay the stigma surrounding psychiatric disorders include Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Amanda Seyfried.

Celebrities, often, go public with their mental health struggles in a bid to use their fame to influence others to seek a medical intervention. Sometimes, when a celebrity publicly shares his or her opinions and struggles with mental illnesses, it triggers the much-needed conversation that would not have taken place otherwise. Famous personalities’ dare-to-bare attitude must be regarded as a well-timed opportunity to reduce shame and fear associated with mental disorders.

Looking for treatment

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), in 2015, there were over 43 million people aged 18 years or older in the country – representing about 18 percent of the adult population — with any mental illness (AMI) within the previous year. Timely treatment keeps issues surrounding mental health at bay. While it takes times to completely recover from the manifestations of a mental disorder, seeking expert counsel can help those affected get rid of the impediments they face in their daily lives.
