BIPOLAR DISORDER

Mental health disorders or problems can happen to anyone. The different types of bipolar disorders can be induced or worsened by an addictive substance, prescribed medicine or unspecified factor. It is important for anyone who experiences these life altering conditions to identify and address any underlying problems as well.   Bipolar conditions differ from case to case like many other mental disorders. This variation means a clinician or mental health professional should be meticulous in interviewing a client and analyzing his or her list of symptoms, especially when it comes to the critical need for an accurate diagnosis in the recovery process. In fact, the illness has a history of being confused with depressive disorders, as manic symptoms are often harder to differentiate, especially in children. Fortunately, new diagnostic classifications have been made to precisely determine unique versions of bipolar thoughts, feelings and actions. As diagnoses become increasingly specific, adapted treatment plans can become more effective.

Key Bipolar Disorder Treatment

People suffering from this condition will experience two distinct, periodic states: mania and depression. While the former brings about a monstrous flow of energy, the latter leaves one’s emotional state dry and devoid of pleasure. Both sides of the disorder seriously obstruct the person’s daily functioning, whether it is at school, work or simply interacting with others. In addition, the constant jumps from one state to another can take an extra toll on an individual. In a matter of moments, one can move from a frantic rant to sluggish sobbing.

Bipolar I Disorder

Bipolar I disorders is a dysfunctional relationship of emotional highs and lows. Under the wide umbrella of mood disorders, a person will endure depressive conditions, which is the occurrence of major depressive episodes. Furthermore, a person will also experience episodes of mania, which is a drastic change in mood with an extremely abnormal increase in energy lasting for a week or more. These mood swings are not only clearly observable and uncharacteristic of a person’s normal attitude, but also causes significant impairment to one’s social or daily obligations, such as work, school or relationships. Also unique to a manic experience is psychosis, which can occur in the form of hallucinations or other illusions and may warrant hospitalization.

Bipolar II Disorder

The major difference between bipolar I and bipolar II disorder is the occurrence of hypomania. While bipolar I’s manic episodes can seriously hinder a person’s ability to function and induce psychotic symptoms, hypomanic episodes do not. Hypomania is defined as a period of abnormally and persistently heightened, expansive or agitated mood and increased activity or energy, lasting the majority of each day for four consecutive days or more. Major depressive episodes are also present and a person typically experiences a periodical jump from one type of episode to another.

Cyclothymic Disorder

Those diagnosed with cyclothymic disorder essentially demonstrate some, but not enough criteria to fit a more clearly defined bipolar disorder. While milder than its counterparts, any cycle of varying moods can still take a toll on a human being over time. Fluctuations are both common and chronic, with numerous periods of interchanging hypomanic and depressive symptoms. The disorder also has the possibility of progressing to more serious bipolar or depressive disorders, depending on which type of episode intensifies. In addition, any of these emotionally turbulent conditions may increase the risk of substance-related disorders to self-medicate one’s symptoms.

Overall, manic-depressive afflictions can present themselves in various fashions and equally affect people in different ways. It is also important to seek help at the earliest sign of erratic or depressive behavior. Both mania and depression are fueled by illogical thinking and may drive a person to make dangerous or self-inflicting decisions. Even if the symptoms do not match the criteria of bipolar disorders, the condition may be another serious mood disorder that can have serious consequences if left untreated.
