The nature of bipolar disorders is two-sided as the name implies. People suffering from this condition will experience two distinct, periodic states: mania and depression. While the former brings about a monstrous flow of energy, the latter leaves one’s emotional state dry and devoid of pleasure. Both sides of the disorder seriously obstruct the person’s daily functioning, whether it is at school, work or simply interacting with others. In addition, the constant jumps from one state to another can take an extra toll on an individual. In a matter of moments, one can move from a frantic rant to sluggish sobbing. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness or manic depression, is a mental illness that causes severe changes in an individual’s mood, sleep pattern, energy, thinking and behavior.
Bipolar disorder usually starts in late adolescence or in young adulthood and usually lasts a lifetime. It can run in families and both men and women are equally likely to get it. When untreated, bipolar disorder can result in poor performance in school and work, damaged relationships and even suicide.
It is defined by manic episodes that may last for at least seven days. In severe cases, patients may require immediate hospitalization. Episodes involving both mania and depression are also possible in bipolar I disorder.
It is also defined by a pattern of depressive or manic episodes; however, here manic episodes are not severe. Individuals suffering from bipolar II disorder can be depressed for a longer period of time, causing significant impairments.
It involves manic or depressive symptoms that last for at least for two years in adults and at least for one year in children and adolescents.
A mixed bipolar disorder is characterized by the occurrence of symptoms of both mania and depression. It is marked by symptoms like racing thoughts, sleeplessness and high energy.
There is no single reason for bipolar disorder. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including brain biology, personality, genetic and environmental. Some other factors that may trigger bipolar disorder are drug or alcohol abuse, stressful periods and major life changes.
For those suffering from bipolar disorder, the dramatic mood episodes do not follow a set pattern and severity of the mood differs from person to person.
Following are some of the symptoms experienced during the high or mania period.
Following are some of the symptoms experienced during the low or depressive period.
Individuals suffering from bipolar disorder can benefit from a combination of FDA-approved medications and psychotherapy. Medications for bipolar disorder include antidepressants, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. Some of the psychotherapy treatments for bipolar disorder include the following:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
During CBT, a therapist helps a patient identify the unhealthy and negative beliefs and replace them with healthy and positive ones. It helps patients identify various conditions triggering the bipolar symptoms and learn effective strategies to manage stress.
Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT)
During IPSRT, a therapist focuses on stabilizing daily activities of a patient, including sleep time, meal time and wake time. The therapist also helps maintain an established routine for sleep, diet and exercise.
Family-Focused Therapy (FFT)
FFT is a combination of family therapy and psychoeducation that involves teaching patients and their families about the nature of the illness. It involves a therapist working with the family members in identifying and resolving difficulties within the families that may contribute to a stressful environment.
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
During ECT, electrical currents are passed through the patient’s brain and is typically sought in cases where medications and psychotherapies do not help.
In addition to psychotherapies, individuals suffering from bipolar disorder may benefit from self-help methods like regular physical exercise, healthy diet and avoiding substances like alcohol or drugs.
At Sovereign Health, we offer an array of treatment modalities to help alleviate symptoms, improve self-awareness and prevent relapse. Following are some of the evidence-based modalities offered at Sovereign Health.
Designed to improve neurocognitive abilities like attention and working memory, cognitive remediation technique allows the patient to gain back the skills that require high-level functioning with heightened awareness and attention to details.
Useful in treating addiction or mental illness, the approach works by retraining the brain to react differently to stimuli brought on by the changes in environment.
Experiential therapies encourage patients to dig deep into their subconscious and uncover issues that lead to addiction or mental health disorders. The therapies involve role-playing, guided imagery and the use of props to uncover hidden issues.
Rock to Recovery
Offered at all of Sovereign Health’s California locations, Rock to Recovery is based on music therapy and is known to cure a mental disorder or an addiction. It helps patients get in touch with their artistic side and express themselves by singing, playing instruments or dancing.
At Sovereign Health, we provide both inpatient and outpatient care for adolescents and adults with mental illness, substance abuse problem and co-occurring disorders. The various types of facilities are:
Residential Treatment Center (RTC)
Similar to inpatient hospitalization, a residential treatment center provides comprehensive treatment to an individual in a private and serene setting. It offers 24/7 care and is apt for patients requiring medical or psychiatric supervision. The treatment duration at an RTC ranges from 30, 60 to 90 days.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Partial hospitalization program is appropriate for patients requiring intensive mental health care, but not 24/7 medical or psychiatric supervision. It allows patients to live at home or in a sober living facility.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Sovereign Health’s IOP is appropriate for patients who have completed residential treatment or do not require PHP or residential treatment. The program provides 9-14 hours a week of mental health treatment to patients, allowing them to manage other responsibilities.
